bare soil, dying plants

Both overgrazing and overrest produce bare soil by killing plants and keeping new plants from starting.

Overgrazing exposed virtually all soil (red area) on a pasture east of Cobar, on the western plains of New South Wales, Australia. Outside the pasture (gray area), overrest killed most plants, left the remainder with shallow roots, and bared large areas of soil.
