Is your submission about managing wholes?

Our number one reason for rejecting submitted stories is that they are not about managing wholes, but are about parts, policies, or issues. It's often a subtle distinction — but many innovative, well-intentioned, progressive-sounding ideas don't go very deep into the causes of the problems we experience. As Edward Deming said, they "only dig deeper the pit we are in."

Holistic decision making is not about judging tools such as pesticides, livestock grazing, fossil fuels, or multinational corporations as "good" or "bad". It is about taking responsibility for the quality of one's life and that of other people, including future generations. And it's about making decisions and taking steps that actually move in that direction.

Posting your story

If you haven't written the article yet, email us a brief description of what you want to write. We'll let you know whether it's right for us.

If you've already written an article (and perhaps published or posted it elsewhere), simply email us the text and photos — contact us first for details.

When submitting a story, remember to:

Give it a descriptive title. The title may be the only part of your article a person using a search engine will see. So make your title descriptive, vivid, and specific. Bad: "Our poultry adventures." Good: "Hoop houses protect pastured poultry from storms and predators".
Include the author's name.
Include your name if it is different than the author's, or if you are submitting a link, photo, or review.
Use short paragraphs, shorter than you would in print. Break long paragraphs into several shorter ones. More web writing tips.
Caption your pictures by using italic text after the picture. We like captions that say where the photo was taken, who took it, and when. How does the date relate to the local wet, dry, cool, or warm season? What do we see, and why is it significant? Be specific; we get visitors from all over the world. Example:

Bison graze dormant prairie on Jane Smith's farm near Hanover, Kansas, U.S.A., November 2001 (late autumn).
Check your links (web and email) to make sure they are correct.
